MARIE ALEXANDER-HOTH, PMHNP-BC
HIGHLAND CLINIC & VIRTUAL
Hello, and welcome.
I have spent more than 30 years serving individuals and families in a variety of healthcare settings. My healthcare career began in community nursing in 1993, and I completed my Public Health Nurse Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (PHN-APRN) training in 1999. After more than two decades of advanced practice experience caring for individuals and families across the lifespan, I completed a second post-graduate degree as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and became board certified in psychiatric mental health care.
My approach to psychiatry is grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and the belief that symptoms rarely tell the whole story. While diagnoses are important, effective treatment begins with understanding the person behind the diagnosis. Together, we explore not only what symptoms are present, but also what is driving them, how they affect daily life, and what may be preventing you from living the life you want.
Throughout my career, I have learned that mental health challenges rarely exist in isolation. While helping children, adolescents, and adults, I often find that family relationships, communication styles, environmental stressors, and caregiver dynamics play important roles in both wellness and distress. I believe lasting improvement frequently involves supporting not only the individual, but the family system surrounding them. Rather than simply asking, "How do we fix this problem?" I often ask, "What is happening in this person's life, family, and environment that may be contributing to it?"
Personal experiences with divorce, family court systems, medical trauma, mental illness, caregiving, and navigating complex healthcare systems have shaped me into a compassionate and understanding provider. These experiences reinforced the importance of meeting people with respect, honesty, patience, and genuine empathy.
In addition to my nursing and psychiatric training, I have an academic background in Nutrition and Food Science. This foundation continues to influence my practice today. I believe mental wellness is closely connected to physical health, nutrition, sleep, movement, medical conditions, and the body's ability to obtain the nutrients and building blocks necessary for optimal brain function. Whenever appropriate, I incorporate education and practical lifestyle strategies alongside traditional psychiatric treatment.
My clinical interests include ADHD across the lifespan, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, women's mental health, PMDD, and the complex interaction between medical and psychiatric conditions. I especially enjoy helping individuals who have struggled for years with symptoms that may have been misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or only partially treated.
As a prescriber, I am thoughtful and conservative, while also recognizing when appropriate psychopharmacologic treatment can be life-changing. I view treatment as a partnership and work closely with my patients to develop individualized plans that respect their goals, strengths, values, and preferred ways of learning.
Whether you are seeking help for a new concern or have spent years searching for answers, my goal is to help you better understand yourself, improve your quality of life, and move toward the future you want to create.
I am honored to be part of the team at Ampelis Health and look forward to working with you.
